When was the last time you interacted with a NiMH battery?

Rechargeable Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are one of the most common types of rechargeable batteries used in consumer and industrial devices today.

They offer a safe, reliable, and environmentally friendlier alternative to older battery chemistries like nickel-cadmium (NiCd).

What Does NiMH Mean?

NiMH stands for Nickel-Metal Hydride, a type of rechargeable battery technology. A NiMH cell typically delivers about 1.2 volts per cell and stores electrical energy through a reversible chemical reaction between nickel and hydrogen-absorbing alloys.

What´s inside the battery:

  • Positive electrode: nickel oxydroxide

  • Negative electrode: metal hydride alloy

  • Electrolyte: usually potassium hydroxide (KOH)

How NiMH Batteries Work

When the battery charges, hydrogen ions are absorbed into the metal hydride alloy at the negative electrode. When it discharges, those ions flow back through the electrolyte to release energy. This cycle can be repeated hundreds or even thousands of times without significant capacity loss.

Advantages of NiMH Batteries

NiMH batteries remain popular for many applications because they offer several benefits over older and some newer battery types:

Common NiMH Applications

NiMH batteries are used in many everyday and industrial devices, including:

Summary

NiMH batteries are a versatile and reliable rechargeable battery option with a strong track record in consumer electronics and industrial applications. They strike a balance between safety, performance, and environmental impact  making them a go-to choice when lithium-ion batteries are unnecessary or impractical.
